Endeavouring to encapsulate architecture in an all-embracing formula nowadays is quite a challenge in its own right. As a discipline, architecture has become strongly embedded in an increasingly more complex system of cultural and ethical values, technical and economic peripheral conditions and social processes.
In this constantly evolving whirlwind, as an architectural design agency Polo defines its place as an architect-strategist. Thanks to a broad-based understanding of and experience in the development process in which quality architecture acts as an object, Polo adopts a position as a creative mediator between the numerous players involved and the convoluted jumble of peripheral conditions. Its instrument of choice to this end is the “architectural design”.
A good design derives from the quest for an inherent logic between the programme, the construction and the form. Setting out from this logic, we set out to engage in dialogue with the setting which in turn will transform for the better. In doing so, the programme nestles itself in its setting: the “nest” as a metaphor.
Polo endeavours to bring the demand, i.e. the assignment, into focus by conducting a design-led inquiry. We set out to explore the boundaries and engage in dialogue with the client and the authorities in order to find the right tonality. The design aspires to strike a balance within the area of tension that exists between identity and flexibility.
Polo brings every effort to bear to make sure that sustainability does not remain a vacuous concept by adopting a no-nonsense, pragmatic and realistic approach to tracing out the markers of each project. In doing so, Polo fills an inquisitive role by steadily and consistently taking things a step further.
Sustainability goes well beyond the strictly technical aspects. Social and cultural sustainability is closely in keeping with the soft values that are also part and parcel of architecture. Architecture transcends the commonplace in the way it is experienced and is entirely at the service of the resident. In addition, architecture is also a cultural vector par excellence, mostly through its modesty but sometimes also through its imperative manifest and sublime presence.
